Development of rural tourism activities is not only a feasible alternative to achieve sustainable development in China's domestic tourism market, it means a new way of promoting ecological sustainability as well. Facilitating rural tourism can expedite the countryside's environment aesthetically, promote the social status of rural areas, optimize the structure of tourism industry locally, and improve the access to basic services and infrastructure in the targeted destinations. All of these are conducive to sustainable development of domestic tourism. Through understanding the rural tourism development prospects in Huzhou, this paper will illustrate the connotation of rural tourism, its characteristics, types and functions. Further, this paper intends to find an appropriate mechanism and model for sustainable development of rural tourism in Huzhou. A strategic plan for the development of rural tourism will also be proposed. Details of the strategic plan will include featuring the prominent themes, constructing a government involved syndicate model for market operations, raising public awareness and participation, providing advice and training to the industry and rural tourism operators, enhancing regional development and cooperation, and developing rural tourism products. Moreover, all other necessary components for sustainable rural tourism development in Huzhou will be elaborated.
