     Assessing teams
    Speaking Ss work in pair and rank requirements for successful teamwork. Ss then decide if they work in a good team
    Reading 1 Ss read through an article and decide how Cussons improved teamwork at its Polish subsidiary. Ss then read the text again and match endings with sentence stems.

    1. Read the article on P8 about how Cussons developed teamwork at its Polish subsidiaries. What did Cussions do? What benefits did this bring?
    Suggested answer: Cussons brought in three expatriate managers to work with the local sales staff in project teams. It also brought in a consultant, who organizesed two one-week courses, working on team-building and developing creative thinking. Cussons has seen financial benefits, reporting savings of £200, 000 from the first course and expected savings of £700, 000 from the second. The courses have also allowed the participants to measure progress against targets set on the course and have made people excited about their jobs.
    2. Explanation:
    1) Poles apart:是一个惯用表达,意为“完全相反”、“大相径庭”; 同时Poles 又指波兰人。本文题目利用了双关语,指卡森公司与其新收购的波兰分公司原先在团队合作、公司管理等方面大相径庭,而通过培训、调整等一系列措施,双方弥合了这方面的差距。题目的字面意思是“不再有两极之遥”,可意译为“弥合差距”。

    Suggested answer:
    Earlier at Cussons people did not work well in teams. Everyone had to wait for decisions made by the manage and it was not easy to get people to take on responsibility for anything. Cussons decided to try and deal with the problems and brought in a consultant called keith Edmonds to work on managerial skills. He organized team-building courses. The participants worked together and came up with creative ideas. For example, they put on discos.

    1. Ss read the fax on p9 and answer the questions.
    2. Work in pairs. Student A looks at the activity sheet on p145. Student B looks at the activity sheet on p150 and make arrangements.
    Language for making arrangements:

    新闻语篇一般由标题(headline)、导语(lead)和正文(body)三个部分组成。
    标题
    标题常被视为是新闻报道的“眼睛”,常常以独特、新奇的表达方式和显要的位置展示在读者面前,以达到引人注目的效果。作者常利用比喻、双关、压韵、防拟等修辞手段,使标题的语言简洁精练、发人深省。Unit 1a Reading 1(2)的题目No longer Poles apart就是一个双关。
    导语
    导语一般指新闻报道开端的第一个大自然段,大多跟在标题下面,但也不尽然,unit 1a Reading1(2)的导语即安排在文章左侧的图片下面(after 50 years of living in…)。不管位于何处,一般采用不同于标题和正文的字体或色彩来突出导语以引导读者。导语是新闻的精髓,它一般围绕新闻报道中的基本要素(即由who, what, when, where, why, how等引出的问题)用极其精练的语言把时间的过程和一语道破。

    正文是新闻报道的主题部分,它由所要报道的事实组成,向读者事实和详细情况。正文中的信息排序可采用不同的方法,常用的有:(1)以事实的重要性为排列依据:最重要的信息放在开头,次要信息在后,对细节逐一补充。(2)按事实发生的时间顺序排列。(3)混合排列法:用概括性的导语说明的概貌,然后按时间顺序逐一陈述事实。Unit 1a Reading 1(2)就是用的这第(3)种方法。

    熟悉新闻语篇的谋篇特点有利于阅读过程中的信息处理,一般只要阅读了标题和导语,就能了解一则新闻的梗概,阅读时对语篇要传达的主要信息就心中有数了。一旦抓住了语篇的宏观信息。因此,阅读理解能力的提高不能靠题海,而应该在词汇、语法、语篇知识等语言基础上下功夫。
